PopCom

PopCom, a company that makes kiosks and vending machines smarter by using data and analytics, has acquired Wyzerr, a game-based survey startup – a move that both founders say could help shape the future of retail.

Dawn Dickson, founder and CEO of Columbus, Ohio-based Popcom, and Natasia Malaihollo, Wyzerr founder and CEO, said their companies have far-reaching plans for the future. Popcom is an automated retail company leverages facial detection, machine learning and blockchain technology and specializes in smart vending and kiosk solutions, helping retailers collect customer insights.

"The acquisition of Wyzerr marks an exciting new chapter for PopCom,” Dickson said in a release. “Natasia and I have the same goals in mind, and together we will continue to make waves and change the whole look of the automated retail industry."

Wyzerr, created in 2014 and headquartered in Covington, Kentucky, creates fun, fast and easy surveys that look and feel like games. What started as a drawing on the back of a napkin grew to a company that served more than 2,200 customers in over 53 countries, helping businesses like Kroger, Paypal, McDonalds, Procter & Gamble, Walmart, Google and Facebook.

“My journey with Wyzerr was incredible, and we made a real impact on the companies we worked with. But now the world is different. Retail is different,” Malaihollo said. “To stay ahead, we have to think outside of the box and align ourselves with people that are building companies that will not only survive a pandemic but adapt to the new normal. I believe PopCom is what brick-and-mortar stores look like in the future. I’m excited for this new chapter of growth and innovation as we work together to create a new landscape in retail.”

PopCom

PopCom's services have been in particularly high demand during the Covid-19 pandemic, especially since its technology can securely verify customer identity to sell regulated products like cannabis and alcohol in vending machines.

PopCom said the Wyzerr surveys will help the company further develop its artificial intelligence and vending machines. Because the surveys are fun and interesting to complete, the company boasts an unusually high consumer completion rate, which PopCom said will allow it to improve purchasing experiences and zoom in more effectively on consumer needs.

In a blog post, Malaihollo said she has joined PopCom as head of business development, where she will continue to run Wyzerr as standalone software while developing business opportunities that can use Wyzerr and PopCom as one unit.

“If 2020 has taught us anything, it’s that we have to build and create products, services and technologies that serve and enrich our own communities and people,” Malaihollo said. “At PopCom, we will build retail solutions that will make it easier for creators to sell in airports, large cities, hotels and other places they normally wouldn’t be able to have a presence in.”

PopCom, which Dickson created after her own struggle to find vending machines that could sell her Flat Out of Heels roll-up shoes in high-traffic areas like airports, recently made history when it successfully completed its second equity crowdfunding campaign on StartEngine, raising $2.3 million in capital exclusively through crowdfunding investors – a task no other female founder has ever achieved. Those investors now have equity in both PopCom and Wyzerr.
