Woolworths’ new dark store creates 900 jobs

Just in time for the Christmas rush, Woolworths has boosted its online distribution capacity in Sydney by almost 20 per cent after opening its third dark store in the city.
The new online customer fulfilment centre at Lidcombe in Sydney’s west is 15,000 square metres – four times the size of a full-service supermarket – and will create up to 900 jobs for personal shoppers.
It will enable Woolworths to make an additional 20,000 online deliveries to customers in an area ranging from Parramatta to Newtown and Bankstown to Lane Cove, augmenting dark stores at Botany and Brookvale.
The site, located in a former Fastway Couriers distribution centre, is Woolworths’ largest online hub in Australia and its fifth online customer fulfilment centre.
The facility, fitted out by Mainbrace Constructions, has wider aisles and more shelf space than a standard supermarket to enable personal shoppers to hand-pick orders from a range of about 20,000 products without having to navigate around customers.
