8 Modern Seats from Top Designers

December 14, 2020
By Interior Design Staff

Top designers introduce seats of modern design.

Photography by Heiko Prigge.

Designer: Faye Toogood for Hem

Product: Puffy

Standout: The creator of the Roly Poly chair delves further into cozy, reassuring forms with a steel-frame armchair draped in a padded comforter held in place with Velcro.

Designer: Peter Bundgaard Rützou and Signe Bindslev Henriksen for Mater

Product: The Lounge Chair

Standout: The Space Copenhagen designers debut a Scandi-modern seating collection crafted of solid oak or beech obtained solely from well-managed forests that support U.N. Sustainable Development Goals.

Designer: Konstantin Grcic for Magis

Product: Bell

Standout: Polypropylene recycled from the Italian manufacturer’s production waste (as well as that of the local car industry)
is used to form the German designer’s racy—and recyclable—monobloc chair.

Designer: Inga Sempé for Hay

Product: Pandarine

Standout: Specify cylindrical arms or, better yet, pillowlike versions that recline in concert with the sofa’s backrest modules, transforming the seat into an almost-mattress.

Designer: Russell Pinch and Oona Bannon of Pinch

Product: Merrell

Standout: The brand cofounders’ sculptural chaise longue with traditional sprung seat and back feels entirely contemporary courtesy of its clean-lined, minimalist
silhouette.

Designer: Philippe Nigro for Ligne Roset

Product: Hémicycle

Standout: This conversation chair is part
of a seating collection the designer created with Mobilier National, an organization under the French Ministry of Culture that furnishes official buildings and supports innovation.

Designer: Lee Broom of Lee Broom

Product: Maestro

Standout: A trio of hand-bent, mirror-polish chromed tubes frame the U.K. designer’s seat—a seamless circular embrace inspired by the coils of a French horn.

Designer: Thomas Bentzen for Muuto

Product: Loft in Stained Dark Brown

Standout: The manufacturer introduces an
environmentally friendly water-based lacquer in a rich mocha hue that can be applied to
select wooden designs within its portfolio—such as the Danish designer’s oak-veneer seat.
