In this directed response you are to examine your own recent [since the beginning of summer school] interaction with the Internet. To what extent does your behavior reflect the "pancake person" behavior that Carr fears? Cite specific experiences, e.g. "I went to the GoPack website to see what was going on this weekend, then I went to the ESPN website to check on the ACC baseball standings, I noticed that these websites tended to . . .", not just general tenancies e.g. "I get sports information on the web, it seems to be . . . " Be specific. "The websites seemed designed to keep me in the "ESPN world" by promoting fantasy leagues or fan shopping. Examine to what extent your behavior reflects an Internet that "inclines us to deep thinking," and do those experiences and conclusions incline you to share Carr's fears or disagree with him?

These books all attempt to address major issues of concern that come along with the benefits of the Internet and digital technology. Your task is to define - using citations from the book to support your claim - the major communication issue being raised by the author. To clarify, the Internet often moves ahead via engineering break throughs - e.g. both Amazon and Facebook are exploring unique engineering approaches to bringing the Internet to currently underserved populations. [This is not a good topic for this course] The engineering perspective would to discuss whether satellites or balloons or whatever would be the best approach. That is not of concern in this course. We would, rather, be concerned about the social, personal or political impact of bringing several billion more people onto the Internet.Once you have defined the major communication issue you should the examine the issue from a "good news - bad news" perspective. How can we see this issue as good news, and how might we see it as bad news?

In this first essay, consider the roles of social media, censorship, and privatization in the way that we acquire information. The "filter bubble" is in a sense an echo chamber curated for us by algorithms. Using the Pariser text to direct your conversation, argue both the pros and cons of the "filter bubble." One side is certainly going to be a bit easier to argue for each of us depending on our ideological backgrounds, but I want us to think critically about how the filter bubble might be pushed back on and embraced by the general public.
