‘Tis the season for streaming miracles
The holiday season brings with it surprises and wonder, and that holds true even in the world of online streaming services. Case in point? On December 9th, Netflix will be debuting the second season of Fuller House, just 10 months after the first season was gifted to the universe. It’s a case of millions of fans, having spent 2016 hoping and praying, having their holiday wishes come true. (Or maybe Netflix just wants to distract everyone from the less-than-enthusiastic reception Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life has been receiving.)
But the Tanner family won’t be the only new thing showing up on Netflix. The build team from Mythbusters will be debuting their new show, White Rabbit Project, on the same day, and Netflix will be adding both Captain America: Civil War and The Angry Birds Movie at various points in the month as well. (The Robin Williams vehicle Toys will also come to Netflix on December 1st, but nobody really cares about that movie except for me, because I had some misguided fascination with it growing up. I even own the soundtrack. Props to Tori Amos for that “Happy Worker” song.)
Amazon Prime, on the other hand, will be getting TV fans ready for the upcoming second season of Syfy’s The Expanse when it adds the show’s first season in December, and the second season of The Man in the High Castle will also be making its debut. Amazon will be continuing its ongoing relationship with filmmaker Woody Allen, as well, when it debuts Café Society on December 22nd.
That’s not going to be enough for everyone, of course. Sometimes the only service you have is HBO Now, and you just really want to watch Midnight Special, Keanu, Self/Less, or Hail, Caesar! Most months, you’d be out of luck — but as Hans Gruber once said, this is the time of miracles, and in December HBO Now customers will be able to do just that.
Of course, that doesn’t mean the month isn’t without its downsides. It turns out that in December HBO Now will be losing a movie called MI-5. Now, I hadn’t heard of MI-5, so when I saw it on this month’s list I looked it up, and it turns out that it’s basically Jason Bourne meets The Rock, with Jon Snow in the Sean Connery and Matt Damon roles. This may not be a completely accurate description, but it’s certainly the vibe the trailer gives. You have until December 31st to find out for sure.
